Stewart, Melvin & Frost is proud to share that our longtime partner, Mark Alexander, has been appointed Circuit Public Defender for Georgia’s Northeastern Judicial Circuit. Mark brings to this new role more than three decades of experience, leadership, and unwavering dedication to justice. While we will miss his daily presence at the firm, we are honored to celebrate his transition into this next chapter of distinguished public service.
Mark joined Stewart, Melvin & Frost in 1992 after beginning his career as an assistant district attorney in Gainesville. From the start, he established himself as an exceptional trial lawyer—trusted by clients, respected by peers, and admired by colleagues for his skill, integrity, and mentorship. Over the years, Mark has guided numerous complex cases to successful resolution and has helped shape the next generation of civil litigators at our firm.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mark has exemplified the firm’s core values of service and leadership. He has served on the State Bar of Georgia’s Board of Governors since 2012 and led multiple professional organizations, including as president of the Gainesville–Northeastern Bar Association and the E. Wycliffe Orr Inn of Court. His civic contributions—spanning from community development initiatives to church leadership—reflect a deep and enduring commitment to the greater Gainesville community.
At Stewart, Melvin & Frost, we take great pride in our tradition of producing leaders who go on to serve the public in vital roles across Georgia. Mark follows in a long line of our partners who have stepped into positions of public trust—an enduring testament to our firm’s culture of excellence, integrity, and community stewardship.
Mark succeeds Brad Morris, who is retiring after more than 20 years of dedicated service as Circuit Public Defender. Mark’s appointment ensures that the citizens of Northeast Georgia remain well represented and well served.
“As a former prosecutor, I’m returning to my roots in the criminal justice system,” Mark said. “I am committed to representing our clients with passion and dignity, because justice demands nothing less.”
We are grateful for Mark’s many contributions to Stewart, Melvin & Frost and proud to see him take on this important role. Mark adds to the rich history of our firm, and his leadership has helped shape our firm’s success. Mark’s example continues to inspire our commitment to excellence on behalf of our clients and community.
Please join us in congratulating Mark Alexander on this well-deserved honor and wishing him every success in his new role.
